As a part of self care, nails are at the top of my list. The basic self care regimen for example, hair done, manicure, pedicure, skin care products and shopping for new clothes are a must! It makes me feel like I am keeping up with my hygiene as well as it is becoming a relaxing thing to do. In other words, my nail tech is the person that gave me the idea on this topic, nail care tips after acrylic. We talk about any and everything under the hour and half we spend with each other bi-weekly. We talk as if we’ve been knowing each other since we were kids and that is the relationship I love to have with genuine people. One of the things I realize as I’m getting my bi-weekly routine is the lack of nail care knowledge that unfortunately women do not realize. Keep on reading to know exactly what I am talking about.

What is Acrylic Nails?

Acrylic or “fake nails” as some would like to say is a combination of liquid and powder that nail techs uses to form the desire shape. Acrylic nails can either be use with tips or strictly on your nail beds also known as overlay. Also, they can help those who naturally have unhealthy nails like chipping or nails that break easily. I’m not too familiar with the science behind it, but that is just the gist of what acrylic is.

3 Helpful Nail Care Tips

1. Different Acrylics

Be mindful of the acrylic that nail techs use. My nail tech informed me the reason why she charges more to do a fill-in if it is not her work. The reason is because, not all nail techs uses the same acrylic. The nail tech should provide a safe acrylic to use! Not one that is cheap and used for other purposes. Your acrylic should not turn colors! I repeat, the same color that was applied should be the same color when you come back for a fill-in or a soak off.

In addition to different types of acrylics that are out there, acrylic does has harmful chemicals in it, but that is why a base should be applied before application. Do your research on the type of acrylics out there and make sure your nail tech is using the RIGHT one.

2. Fill-ins

The proper turnaround time for a fill-in is no more than 2 or 3 times. Your natural nail needs time to BREATHE. This is another reason why good nail techs will not work on other’s work unless you are getting a soak off. They do not know how long you had that acrylic on. Yes, you can provide them with that information, but who’s to say if the potential client is falsifying the information or you don’t remember exactly how many times you had a fill-in before you came? Peep the key word, good nail techs, because those are the ones that care about your nail health versus the ones that want your money.

3. Take a Break

After my max out fill-ins, I always take about a week break from acrylic. This is the breathing room your nails need from those harsh chemicals. Get you a basic manicure, rub some cuticle oil on daily and let them nails breathe sis. Your nails will thank you in the end.

A small business I would like to shout out is TatisNailsXOXO. The owner is Tati, who is a licensed nail technician that creates mani bombs, cuticle oils, hand scrubs, toxic free nail polish and so much more!

I personally have purchased the Lavender and Hemp cuticle oil about a year ago and it was the best thing ever! I still have them till this day, because they last that long if you use the cuticle oil wisely. The best thing is that her products are also vegan friendly and cruelty free! Make sure you guys check her out, because her stuff is the BOMB! 💅🏽
